Finishing Up

Pieces of Thesis:
Gallery Space- Check
Poster for Ad Thesis- Check
Show Cards- Sent
Facebook Event- Check
14 Panels- Check
Book- Almost Done
4 Ceramics pieces- Being Fired
Title- Check

So I'm in pretty good shape. The ceramics is freaking me out a little bit just because its coming down to the wire, but as long as nothing goes horribly horribly wrong, I will be ok. The book will be finished after I set up the space because I want to include images of the set up and final space. I am getting the moss, leaves, and tree on thursday so its "fresh." After that its just setting up and celebrating being done.

Progress and an Uh Oh

Ok so, the ceramics are in the hands of the kiln gods now, they're about to be fired this week... all but one. The vase broke in an act of stupidness on my part, but I knew that was an option and have already taken the necessary of action of making a new one. I hope to have that (and the back up one) finished Wednesday and be fired over the weekend, so I'm not put too far behind schedule.

I have the lettering, and wow does that make this all seem real. The book got put off, but I know I will get it done in time. I also am getting my poster for the Ad thesis printed as I type.

For next week, the fate of the ceramics will be determined, and I want to get them glazed and done. The book will hopefully be mostly finished (since I don't need this for the Ad thesis I'm not stressing it). This project is on the threshold just a few things to finish up and then in less than 2 weeks the show will be on!!!

Ceramics

This week I worked a lot on ceramics and have 3 of my 4 pieces half way done. I will have these three done tomorrow (all I need to do is apply the texture). The fourth piece I am waiting for the texture that I am applying to be fired, but I will have the shape and size of the piece started tomorrow during my ceramics class. To be finished up this weekend. Which means all I will have to do is apply glaze and fire the pieces with "time to spare." (hopefully nothing goes wrong, but I will just redo it if something does)

I also worked on the book, and that is coming together slowly but surely. I want to wait to print this until the last minute possible so that I get my entire process into it for the show. I also procured my pedestals, put up my show cards around campus, and contacted someone about getting vinyl lettering done. Everything is coming together in my opinion.

For next week, I will be firing all my ceramics pieces and continuing to work on the book. I also want to procure the lettering just so thats one thing do not have to worry about in the final weeks before the show goes up.

3.5 Weeks Left

Well that's a concerning title isn't it? But the good news it I'm still on track. All panels are in!!!! Show cards are in!!!! Ceramics is started!!! Book is started!!!

So, I'm not that concerned about the book. That can be done at the end, and probably should be so I can include the entire project in the book. The ceramics is due before thesis is goes up, so thats going to be done no ifs and or buts about it.

For next week, I will have continued progress on the book and I want to have half of the ceramics made and ready for firing. I also, plan to have my show cards sent out this weekend and a facebook event created to promote my thesis.

Panels Ordered

As the title of this post says, I have ordered all my panels for thesis, and they are on their way. I was able to make all of them over spring break and place the order Sunday. So that's a huge weight off my shoulders. Also, I'm fine tuning my cards and will have them ordered this week.

I still need to put together the book and work on the ceramics portion of thesis, but I'm not too worried yet. This ceramics also works with my ceramics final, so I should have plenty of time to complete that.

For next week, I will have everything that needs to be on its way, ordered. I also want to start on the book and ceramics.

We have lift off

The sickness is gone and I made some serious progress this week.

For starters, the gallery space has been confirmed for the week of April 28th. Which means I was finally able to take measurements and start planning how many pieces I need to be working on. And let me just say the space is a lot bigger than I thought, but since I still have some time, I think I will still be ok. I also was able to do the photo shoot I needed to complete the project.

I ran into a bit of trouble this week with he printing process, but I think I have a plan for that now too. The original plan was to print on campus in the print lab, but I found out this week that the largest I can do is 5' by 22'' which doesn't have the size impact I was hoping for. After researching, I found out that VistaPrint prints banners that are 8' by 3' much closer to what I had in mind, so I ordered a test print to see how the quality is and see what the next step will be. I hope to have the test print before leaving for spring break next week. The back up plan if this doesn't work (or I can't find somewhere else to print that does better quality at the right size and price) is to change the concept behind the exhibition to that of a more traditional gallery space and not have the large paneling and just print at the school.

For next week, I was planning on taking an actual vacation from everything, but I think I would feel better if I got the panels all made and ready to be printed, so I can send them out or get them sent to the print lab so I have some wiggle room and some error room. I also want to get my show cards reviewed on thursday/ friday by my teacher and advisor and then send them out for printing before I leave for spring break. It's all coming together fast now.

Sick

So I have been sick with a stomach flu for the better part of the past week which means not a lot has gotten done. However, I did manage to meet with Julie again yesterday. We discussed artist statements and titles and production. The gallery space is mine for the week of the 28th of April, so its safe to start production, which I plan to do as soon as I'm feeling better. Snow this past weekend prevented me from doing the new shoot, but it's supposed to warm up this weekend and hopefully I can get the photos then.

My plans for next week are to 1. Produce with proper dimensions 2. get show cards ready to be sent to the printers 3. photo shoot (Ohio weather permitting) 4. continue to refine artist statement 5. Get Healthy... With the last one being a must.

Pause...

This past week was a slow one as far as thesis goes and a busy one for everything else which is why there isn't a lot of progress for this week. I finalized my proposal to be turned in today and did some more research on forestry in Ohio. I'm still waiting for a conformation on my gallery space, so I'm kind of at a stand still. I have given some more thought as to the 3D aspects of my thesis (ceramics, models, etc.) and have done some miniature mock ups.

This weekend I'm planning a photo shoot to get the rest of the necessary images for production. I again hope to get conformation on the gallery and take measurement, pictures, and figure all the logistics out. If everything goes as planned, I plan to get my show cards mocked up so I can get them printed soon. I can't help but think of the Jeopardy music right now, but we'll see.

Making Progress

This week I have made some serious progress with my goals.

For starters, I have tentatively procured a gallery space. I need to get clearance from my teacher on the dates and double check with Julie Taggart about everything and all will be set. Which means, I can hopefully start production soon on pieces and make event cards to be sent out a month before my show. I also have a rough draft done of my proposal and am emailing Julie a copy today for her to go over and work out any issues she might find. I had my gantt chart reviewed, and my teacher said it was okay, but I might want to make the production section a bit more detailed. I am hoping that with the starting extra early on production that being more detailed won't be an issue, but we will see.

I realize this project lasts the whole semester, but I want to get ahead as much as possible so that if any problems do arise, especially in the printing of things, then I will have time to work with and not be freaking out at the end of the semester when everything is due and the doom of Directions is looming over my head too.

For next week, the proposal is due, so I want to have a really solid one completed. For my next meeting with Julie (date yet to be determined but no more than 2 weeks), I am to look at artist statements and begin writing mine and look at the application process of grad school, so she can help me with that as well. I also need to begin my separate portfolio for grad school. I have some of the pieces, but need to reformat them in educational thinking style. Beyond that it's continued research I guess unless I get the green light on the gallery. In which case, I plan to take measurements, get a really good handle on layout, figure out how many panels I need to print, and start production. Right now it's a waiting game, but I would rather be spinning my wheels because I'm ahead than being overwhelmed and have too much to do.

Mentor and Gantt Chart

I finally got to meet with my mentor this week, Julie Taggart. We talked about the entire project, what I want from her, gallery spaces, etc. She is looking into the gallery spaces on campus for me because the process can be hard do if you don't know who to talk to. She has emailed the gallery people and if we can't find something we are prepared to start looking off campus. Julie and I are planning to meet every other week throughout the project with our next meeting being next Monday.

As far as the gantt chart goes, I have a rough draft and want to see if there is anything I need to add to it. I wasn't sure on how detailed it should be, but since it's not due right away, I figured I have time to tweak, but it's good to get started. Take a look and tell me what you think.

For next week, I will have met with Julie a second time. We will discuss the project more, and she is going to look over my portfolio to see if there is anything in the thesis that could be added to enhance my portfolio more seems how one of the goals for this project is to increase my fine arts pieces to help me get into graduate school. I will have talked to my teacher more and hopefully will have a final gantt chart done. I also will post initial images and quotes for the project. A rough draft of the 3 page proposal is also on my list of things to do, so I can see what Julie thinks on Monday and my teacher can tell me if I'm doing what they want.

Rough Draft Gantt Chart

First hiccup

This week I got a hold of mentor and filled her in on what I am planning to do. We are going to set up a meeting to further discuss the project and get her input as describing a visual concept through email can cause some problems. Because of this I haven't gotten a lot of feedback from her yet so my plans for looking into galleries has been put on hold for a sec. I did however start a mood board to keep me on point through out this entire process so that the project doesn't form a life of its own and get off point.

The plan for this week envolves getting the ball really rolling. I hope to meet with my mentor and get her input, discuss galleries, and any other words of wisdom she can pass on to me. If this doesn't go as planned I want to talk to some of my senior fine arts major friends to see who they talked to get their gallery spaces on campus and email those people. I also want to get my gant chart done and start looking into quotes from my research to incorporate into the images.

Final Topic

And the winner is... the trees!!! After further research into my various topics that I discussed last week, I have decided to do something close to home and that has measurable stats that I can bring into my final project. As far as a focus goes, I want to stick with why we need to continue to expand our forests in Ohio by not only planting new trees but keeping the older ones around as well.

The more I thought about it, I realized that forestry would have the best visual impact for the method that I want to do as a deliverable. It is also an important topic; one that I actually care about and won't get bored with easily. I can do a lot of data, take my own pictures, gather my own materials, and really be immersed into the project, not just be an outsider looking in.

For next week, I want to have contacted my mentor and get her up to speed, get her initial ideas and any direction she can give me to start with. I also plan to look into gallery spaces seems how I know I want to do a gallery opening and procuring the right space may be an issue. I'm hoping starting early will lessen some of the issues.

Let it Begin

Senior year 2nd semester at CCAD equals the beginning of the senior AD Graph Thesis project. One that I am looking forward to I might add. Why? Because we get to do just about anything we want! And as an ad graph major hoping to break into the art education world, it gives me a chance to round out my portfolio in way other than pure digital computer advertising/graphic design.

So, concepts... Last semester I was shown to an amazing artist, Barbara Kruger, and I love her work and want to do something similar to what she does. If you don't know her look her up or continue to read my blog posts I'm sure you'll figure it out. Anyway, She does a lot of feminism stuff, I'm not into that, but I do like the MAKE people look idea. So, for my thesis topics I want to do something that people don't think about. 3 ideas: the clearing of timber on farms just to have an extra couple acres of farmland, relationships and how much negative pressure they can cause people at every age, modern life and how we don't appreciate the little things anymore.

Obviously, being that this is just the starting point I haven't done a lot of research, but I have started researching Barbara and people like her for ideas and motivation. Next week I need to finalize a topic and start gathering information. The more I know the less people who are against my views will be able to poke holes into my project. This is a whole new thing for me and I'm excited so let it begin.

Imagination

This was a little something that I was working on. The concept was to literally bring imagination to life. The poems transfered into the handmade sketchbooks are all original poems I wrote. The imaging coming out of the pages are what you would imagine when reading the poems.

Plans for the future

Ok so right now I am attending the Columbus College of Art and Design and am majoring in Advertising and Graphic Design. The future hopefully holds a different route. I would love to go to grad school for art education, at least that's the current plan. I've lived in Ohio all my life and yearn to move some place not so... COLD. So, we'll see what happens. The future is a mystery just waiting to be solved.
