3rd Grade Lessons

My approach to 3rd grade art is a holistic one. I aspire to advance their understanding of art techniques, art history, and the elements and principles of art to build up their art education foundation.

Cup Weaving

In this project, students learn the basics of weaving in a 3D space using a cup as the warp and yarn or other materials as the weft. Discussions of the elements of art are woven into the lecture with texture, space, form, and color all intertwines together to create a unique 3D work that they also learn how to photograph and display on their own digital portfolio using Artsonia.


Dream Catcher

In this lesson, students explore the Native American Culture and its impact on Ohio. Students discuss the history of the dream catcher, and learn a variety of ways to draw a dream catcher. They then learn the process of resist in watercolor painting to create “hidden” messages or images in the artwork and reveal them with watercolor.


Hokusai’s Great Wave

Diving into world history, students are read a biographical story of the great artist Hokusai. They then engage in a hand-eye activity to learn how to hold and use chopsticks. In the following lesson, students have the option to use the chopsticks to create their own version of the Great Wave using a variety of materials and techniques.
